How it is made
Every model starts as real elevation data. We take publicly available digital elevation models of the mountain, process the terrain in GIS software, and build the geometry from the actual topography. The Knife Edge, the cirques, and the summit plateau all sit where they do in the real world, not where an artist decided they should go.
Katahdin is the highest point in Maine and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The Knife Edge, an arete that runs roughly a mile and narrows to a few feet across in places, is the detail that makes this one worth owning at the larger sizes.
The relief is printed in matte PLA and finished by hand, then mounted to a wood base. Choose a single-color finish for a clean, sculptural look, or a multi-color finish with colors mapped to elevation the way a topographic map reads.
