Our process
Terrain3D makes 3D-printed relief models of real mountains.
Every model is built from real elevation data, not sculpted by hand or eye. We pull publicly available digital elevation models, clip them to the mountain, process the terrain in GIS software, and generate the geometry directly from the topography. The result is a physically accurate miniature of the mountain, at a consistent scale, with every ridge and drainage where it actually sits on the ground.
We print in matte PLA, a plant-based plastic, and finish each piece by hand before mounting it to a solid wood base. Nothing is mass-produced. Every model is printed when it is ordered.
The multi-color models use a color-by-elevation approach borrowed from topographic maps: snow and ice at the summit, exposed rock through the alpine zone, and forest green at the base. The single-color models in gray and white read more like a sculpture and suit a minimal shelf.
We are based in North Carolina and run this as a small operation. If you want a mountain we do not currently offer, get in touch. Custom peaks are the most interesting work we do.
