How it is made

Every model starts as real elevation data. We take publicly available digital elevation models of the mountain, process the terrain in GIS software, and build the geometry from the actual topography. The crater rim, the breach to the north, and the debris field below all sit where they do in the real world, not where an artist decided they should go.

St. Helens is the one model in the collection that is not a peak. The 1980 eruption removed roughly 1,300 feet from the top of the mountain and left a horseshoe crater open to the north. In relief that missing summit is unmistakable, and it is what makes this piece read so differently from every pointed mountain we make.

The relief is printed in matte PLA and finished by hand, then mounted to a wood base. Choose a single-color finish for a clean, sculptural look, or a multi-color finish with colors mapped to elevation the way a topographic map reads.
